The day was perfect - not too hot,just nice to walk and explore Taman Wetland on foot. A group of 17 pax from Standard Chartered Bank arrived at the park for one of the best selling program - Hunt N' Race. They break into 3 groups and compete among themselves to accomplished the race in the shortest time.

Merdeka Cycle N' Hunt 2006

This coming Saturday 2nd September 2006 in conjunction with Merdeka celebration, Taman Wetland Putrajaya will be organizing the annual Merdeka Cycle N' Hunt. Participants are required to form a team of 2 - 4 pax. They will have to cycle from Taman Wetland - to - Taman Warisan Pertanian - to - Dataran Putra - to - Taman Botani - to - Pusat Rekreasi Air and back to Taman Wetland. They are also required to answer questions given and perform several tasks required to complete the hunt. The event will start at 7.30 in the morning. There are 2 categories - Open Category and School Category. Proton bicycles awaits the top winners. Up to date, there are already more than 200 participants signed up for the hunt.

No camera into Sungai Congkak Recreational Forest

It happened during one of my OFF day last week - yes, it was on a 1-week school holiday. I thought I could pay a visit to Sungai Congkak Recreational Forest since Selangor Tourism has taken over the operation of the park months ago. I was all ready to pay the entrance fee of RM1. There were many visitors to the park when I arrived at around 11am. When I wanted to hand over the RM1 note to the staff, he stopped me and asked for a approval letter from State Forestry Department for bringing my camera into the forest. He claimed that taking photograph is consider taking away the forest resources and I should get an approval from the Forestry Department prior to my visit. Well, with all the visitors lining up to enter the park, I avoid any argument and went back into my car and drove to Perdek which is next to this recreational forest.

So, later when I reached home I wrote an email regarding this matter to the Forestry Department but yet to get any reply. So, if they really want to get all photographers to write letter for approval, they might as well get photographers to apply for a license just like hunters applying for license with PERHILITAN to shoot wildboars, etc. There is an increasing number of nature photographers locally and many foreign tourist also brings camera into the forest, should they get permission too?

International Children creating a TUNZA forest in Taman Wetland Putrajaya

It was totally an opportunity of a lifetime for the participants planting trees in Taman Wetland Putrajaya and as for myself, it is moment that I rarely get to see. I mean, how often do I get to see 200 kids from different countries coming to my workplace and plant a tree? never. not in my past 4 years working here. Some of the trees were contributed by FRIM. The species planted are Kandis, Tembusu Tikus, Nam-nam, Rambai and Cheri Terengganu. I will try to take a photo of each tree every month to show the progress of the trees planted by the international children.

Schlumberger's Hunt and Race II 2 July 2006

A total of 21 pax from Schlumberger participated in Hunt n' Race II, an outdoor program which consist of land and water activities. They were divided into 3 groups and each group were given tasks that requires them to move around the park.

NEC Family Day @ Taman Botani & Taman Wetland 2 July 2006

NEC family day with a total pax of 4,500 pax were held on 2 July 2006. The crowd were well distributed to varius spots in the park and also diverted to Lake Recreational Centre (Taman Wetland) which is located next to each other. 2 temporary jetty were installed for boating activities.

Cool-to-Care Camp @ Taman Wetland Putrajaya 7-9 June 2006

The 11th Putrajaya Wetland Camp Series took place from 5-7 June 2006. This time around, campers get a chance to venture out of Putrajaya - yes, we took them to a nearby forest called Sungai Congkak. It was a fun-filled camp with many of them having their first time experience in a jungle.

Taman Rimba Ampang 9 June 2006

it was a nice outing yesterday morning at taman rimba ampang. i decided to get a few hours break in the morning to walk in taman rimba ampang. met ahli chung and bing there. it was not the usual busy morning like my previous visit but still a rewarding walk. some of the species sighted and heard:

red-eyed bulbul
grey bellied bulbul
yellow-vented bulbul
crimson breasted flowerpecker
orange-bellied flowerpecker
blue-banded kingfisher (female)
drongo cuckoo
greater racket-tailed drongo (heard)
eurasian tree sparrow
oriental magpie robin
whiskered treeswift
banded broadbill
yellow-crowned barbet
striped tit babbler (heard)
brown barbet

etc. including leafbirds.

numerous birds and other animals sightings were recorded yesterday. so, if you do not have enough time or do not want to go all the way to taman negara to enjoy the beauty of nature, just drive towards taman rimba ampang and relax for a few hours.

Taman Botani's OKU Camp

Last weekend (27-28 May 2006), Taman Botani Putrajaya organised a camp for Orang Kurang Upaya (OKU). It was indeed a success and the team from Taman Botani were glad and happy that they managed to run the camp as planned. Let me get more news about this camp and possibly get a few photos to share it on this blog.

Oh, by the way, Taman Botani will be organizing a few more camps next month. Of course, there are also a few camps planned and booked in Taman Wetland including the Putrajaya Wetland Camp Series (Taman Wetland's signature camp) and Cool-to-Care Camp (by Rotary International) during the school holidays from 5-7 June 2006 and 7-9 June 2006 respectively.

So from now until 5th of June, the team from Taman Wetland and Taman Botani will be busy preparing for the camp.

Lifer for a beginner

Last Monday, I wanted to get a shot of the large-tailed nightjar on daytime and since Zuraida (a beginner in bird watching and a staff of Taman Wetland Putrajaya) was around the park. I asked her to come along to look for the nightjar. I know she was very excited to see a nightjar 2 months ago when I showed it to a group of local bird watchers. I was so well-prepared with my equipment - I've got my scope, nikon cp4500, DSLR Nikon D70 and the tripod all ready for the assignment. We came to a spot where the chances of seeing the nightjar in daytime is almost 90%. Okay, even when the time was 4pm I can still say there is still 90% chance of seeing at least 1 nightjar. We were scanning through the area with the scope and naked eyes. Nothing. After a while, I decided to informed Zuraida that there is another spot to see this nocturnal bird, but we need to climb up a slope. Before we wanted to climb up, 3 nightjars flew up to the sky from the ground near our path. A beautiful sight indeed!!! No, that's not a lifer for her. So we continued our climb and reach the spot with lots of bamboos. I have spotted the nightjars 2 weeks ago. We went to the exact spot....nothing *sigh*. Move around the area and still nothing. Then, we decided to go down the slope and continue to look for other birds. Got into my car and was driving along the wetland cells. We were seeing swamphens, bee-eaters, munias, baya weavers, and many more. "hey! wait a minute....there's a raptor perching far away" I told Zuraida. I stopped the car and look through my scope - a changeable hawk-eagle, now THIS is the lifer for her. She had not seen this bird before except from the book and also the photos that I took. She was so happy and excited. I let her use my budget digiscoping equipment and taught her the basic of using the equipment. She took some pix and video as well. But we had to cut short the tour when we heard another staff requesting her to attend to a school group for a guided tour in the wetland. So, we will be looking for more birds in our future outings. What a nice surprise! I was doing a search for "putrajaya wetland camp series" on the google and stumbled upon this speech from the President of MAICSA.

"We are indeed blessed by your presence here at Putrajaya Wetlands on this bright sunny morning to start the two-day camp, on the theme “Making A Difference”. Very aptly, we are making it different at this year’s Camp because it is our 45th Anniversary and we want this to be a Camp with a difference. Organising a Camp of this nature is not something new. MAICSA has held its Leadership Camps on an annual basis. What is different this year however is that the Camp has been organized on a larger scale and we have added a theme, purely because it is our 45th Anniversary. We are pleased to note there are 68 participants at today’s Camp, which is about double what we used to have. In addition to students and young members from MAICSA, we have participants form the Certified Public Accountants and the Bar Council, who will participate in at least four ourdoor activities and one night activity for the next two days.
